Lost Books on the Bible

Dust can be an obstacle or a clue, it just depends on where you are going in life. As a lover of all things discovery finding an old, unpublished manuscript from a former professor sparked my curiosity.  The mystery of why it was not published may never be answered but I have a guess.  The book was not finished.  Even though the author had researched and written on the subject for over forty years, he was not satisfied with the work.  After all, is a book ever really finished in the mind of the author?

So began my journey with Roy Oliver Beaman’s tome on the Gospel of John.  Beaman had a lengthy teaching career/ministry at three schools and was my professor for Advanced Greek Grammar in my grad school days.  Beaman was long on lecture and light on assignments so, of course, he was one of my favorites.  His distinctive ways were often imitated by his students, but always as much in affection as in jest.

In my mind I thought the project to bring the book to publication would entail some light editing once the manuscript had been digitized. Wrong.  Roy Beaman read widely and used his own cipher system to record his sources.  Trying to piece together a bibliography covering four decades from cryptic clues like “M & M say” almost proved my undoing.  Beaman used his own translation of the Gospel of John from the Greek, but, alas, that work is no longer extant.  I’m sure my labors would bring no lack of joy to my former professor as I made up for any lack of classroom work as his student.  In fact, I wonder if he left the manuscript unfinished for just such a purpose?  It would not surprise me.  Well, Dr. Beaman, here’s my assignment.  Hope you like it.
